Learning song lyrics and dance steps from Reels offline: my grades for the tools I tried

Every Rongali Bihu, my cousins and I end up in the courtyard trying to dance to a song none of us fully know. Someone remembers the chorus. Someone else remembers half the second verse, wrong. The phone gets passed around, the signal drops, and the Reel with the steps we were copying spins forever.

This year I decided to prepare properly.

Most of the music I love reaches me first through Instagram Reels now. A singer posts a short acoustic version of a new Assamese song. A dance group from Jorhat films the husori steps in slow motion. A Goalpariya folk tune shows up with the lyrics typed on screen. These little clips are where I learn, and I wanted them saved on my phone so I could practise anywhere, with or without data.

So I tested the usual options. Below are my grades, A to C, from the point of view of someone who wants to learn a song or a dance, rather than watch it once.

What a music fan actually needs

Clear audio, first. If the sound is muddy, you cannot catch the words.

Sharp video, second, because lyrics typed on screen and footwork both need detail.

A real file you can pause, replay and slow down in your phone’s own video player. And it should be simple enough that my aunt, who taught us half these songs, can do it on her own phone.

The grades

Sssinstagram, graded A

This was the one I kept using. You open the Reel, tap the share arrow, copy the link, paste it into Sssinstagram in your browser and press Download. The Reel saves as an HD MP4 straight to the gallery.

What I liked:

  • It worked on my Android, my sister’s iPhone and the family desktop without installing anything.
  • The saved video looked and sounded like the Reel itself, so I could hear every word and see the dancers’ hands clearly.
  • When a singer posted lyrics as a carousel of images, it saved those too. Same for photos, IGTV videos and Stories from public accounts.

It only works for public posts. Fair enough. If an artist keeps their account private, that is their choice.

SnapInsta, graded B

Did the job on the public Reels I tried. The file played fine. I gave it a B because the page felt crowded with ads, and when I sent the link to my aunt she called me twice asking which button was the real one.

Inflact, graded B

Also worked. It is a bigger Instagram toolkit, so there are many other things on the site besides downloading. If you want those extras, good. For a music fan who only wants the song, it felt like more than needed.

Toolzu, graded B minus

Similar to Inflact. Worked on public Reels. Nothing bad, nothing that made me switch.

Screen recording, graded C

Here is the thing most people do not realise. Depending on the phone, a screen recording may not capture the sound cleanly, it can pick up notification tones, and the picture is softer than the original. For dance practice, a blurry recording of tiny feet is not much help. I also had to watch the full Reel while recording, every time.

Instagram’s save button, graded C

Saving a Reel with the bookmark icon keeps it in a list inside Instagram. It does not put a file on your phone, and for most Reels the app does not let you download at all. Offline, in the courtyard, it will not play. I still use it to remember songs to look up later.

The grade sheet

Option Saves to gallery Audio and video Install needed Easy for elders Grade
Sssinstagram Yes, MP4 HD, with sound No Yes A
SnapInsta Yes Good No Somewhat B
Inflact Yes Good No Somewhat B
Toolzu Yes Good No Somewhat B minus
Screen recording Yes Lower No Yes C
Instagram save No Plays in app only No Yes C

How I learn a song from a saved Reel

Downloading is the easy bit. Learning takes a little method.

First, I play the Reel with my eyes closed and only listen. Twice.

Then I open the lyrics, either from a lyrics site or from the singer’s own caption, and follow along line by line. For Assamese songs where I am unsure of a word, I replay just that second, sometimes five or six times. With a downloaded file on the phone, this is quick. With a streaming Reel on weak signal, it is torture.

For dance steps, I use the slow-motion trick. Most phone video players let you play at half speed, or you can open the file in a free editor. I watch the feet first, then the hands, then try both. My sister films me, and we compare.

By the evening of the festival, we had four songs down properly. Not perfect. But nobody was mumbling the second verse this time.

Mistakes we made the first year

We tried to learn too many songs at once. Twelve saved Reels, one week, five cousins with different favourites. By the festival we knew a bit of everything and none of it properly. This time we picked four and stuck with them.

We also forgot about storage. My aunt’s phone was nearly full, and her downloads kept failing without telling her why. Clearing old forwarded videos from WhatsApp fixed it in a minute.

And one cousin typed her Instagram password into a site that asked for it before it would save a dance Reel. She changed it the same night, luckily. A downloader that works with public posts has no reason to need your login. If a page asks, close it.

Small lessons. Cheap ones, this time.

Please credit the artists

Saving a Reel to learn from it is one thing. Re-uploading it is another.

If you post your own dance cover, tag the singer and the original choreographer in the caption. If you share the lyrics, name the lyricist and composer where you know them. Many Assamese artists are independent and small, and a tag from a fan genuinely helps them reach new listeners. Never upload their video as your own, even with a different filter on top.

Who should use what

If you want to practise songs and steps offline, Sssinstagram gets my A and stays on my phone’s home screen as a browser shortcut. The B options are fine backups. Keep screen recording and the save button for quick reminders.

Then turn off the data, open the gallery, and sing.
