The EV revolution is gaining momentum in India. As more and more people switch to eco-friendly electric cars and scooters, the demand for a robust charging infrastructure is crucial. But how many EV charging stations are there to meet this growing need? Let’s delve into the current landscape and explore the future of EV charging in India.
Government Initiatives and Industry Efforts
The government of India is making constant efforts to strengthen the EV charging infrastructure in the country. Several initiatives were deployed, such as the utilization of existing electricity connections for EV charging. Lower electricity tariff rates, GO ELECTRIC Campaign, and FAME subsidy (This scheme provides subsidies and financial support for setting up charging stations across the country.) Additionally, several private companies are entering the EV charging space, recognizing the immense potential of this growing market.
Current State of EV Charging Stations in the Country
According to the data shared by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), there are currently 12,146 public EV charging stations operational across India. This information was shared by the Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, in Lok Sabha.
